A B.C. driver had a close call with a flying tire on the highway last weekend.

Sean Gardiner was driving the Trans-Canada Highway near Crofton, B.C. on Vancouver Island on Sunday when a tire flew through the air and hit the front of his truck with such force, it popped the hood.

The tire had become detached from a passing travel trailer on the other side of the highway, and the terrifying incident was caught on Gardiner's dash cam.

While the damage to the vehicle was extensive, Gardiner walked away unharmed.

More than anything, he wants those towing trailers to secure their load to prevent this happening to someone else with an even worse outcome.

"I'm happy I had a lifted truck," he said. "If it was most other vehicles, I think the tire would have come through the windshield."

He said he doesn't want to point blame, just remind those towing a trailer to check it over before long trips.
