Earlier this week, Summerland resident Char-lynn Bubar captured a video of the iconic Kettle Valley steam train after it paused on the Trout Creek trestle bridge before sounding its haunting whistle and chug-chug-chugging forward with puffs of steam billowing out.
Bubar was at the Summerland Ornamental Gardens which offers a great view of the heritage train.
“Everyone on the train waves and all the locals wave back, it’s a really fun thing,” she said. "All the sounds of the train are something special to hear."
The Kettle Valley Steam Railway has been offering train tours for years with steam locomotive #3716 along 16 kilometres of track.
Constructed in the early 20th century to connect communities in the Southern interior, preserved portions of the track are an attraction for locals and tourists, where passengers listen to a commentary on the history of the train while watching picturesque landscapes pass by, according to the Kettle Valley Rail website.
A highlight is a stop atop the Trout Creek trestle bridge built in 1915 at 238 feet above the canyon floor.
Bubar has taken a ride on the train several times over the years and recommends it.
“My kids used to love it, and there are always wineries nearby, who doesn’t like wineries and a train ride?” she said. “It has been great for Summerland tourist-wise.”

Bubar is out exploring in the outdoors almost every day, capturing her love for the Okanagan through photos and videos.
