iN VIDEO: Shoplifting incident at North Shore grocery store caught on video

A video of a security guard and an unidentified man holding down an alleged shoplifter outside of Cain's Your Independent Grocer on Friday March 15, 2019, has been shared hundreds of times on social media.

KAMLOOPS — A confrontation involving a security guard, an unidentified man and an alleged shoplifter at a North Shore grocery store last week was captured on video and has since been shared hundreds of times over social media.

The video, which was posted to Facebook on Friday, March 15, by Jim Kuch, shows a security guard along with an unidentified man in plainclothes physically holding down a young man who was accused of shoplifting at Cain's Your Independent Grocer Store located in the Northills Shopping Centre.

Kuch could not be immediately reached for comment about the video he posted to Facebook.

In the video, the individual being held down can be heard saying, "Please let go of me... I didn't steal, I have to go find the lady to buy it for me." The person can also be heard screaming in pain at various points throughout the five-minute video. At one point another individual appears to intervene but is quickly kicked away by the security guard.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says they were called to a shoplifting incident at 7 p.m. near the grocery store where security had an 18-year-old man in custody.

"We attended and found that the suspect also had an outstanding warrant," Shelkie says. "He was arrested and transported to cells."

The grocery store's owner Jason Cain declined to comment on the incident.

The video itself has generated several concerns from the public including the original video poster who states the security guard and the man in the clip overstepped boundaries when it came to the use of force.
