While this year's operatic season may be on hold due to pandemic, Opera Kelowna is taking to the streets to perform at seniors' residences.

Opera Kelowna has launched Sidewalk Serenade, an initiative where one or two opera singers will sing outside of senior's residences across the Okanagan valley.

"We know that music can heal the spirit, especially in a time of worry," reads a statement on Opera Kelowna's website. "We know that music can help people feel connected in a time of loneliness. We know that listening to a beautiful singer, especially live, can bring solace and comfort in a time of despair."

Anyone in the community can request a Sidewalk Serenade for a seniors' residence in the Okanagan, and while Opera Kelowna say they can’t promise to get to everyone they do promise they will try.

The first Sidewalk Serenade, took place April 24, with mezzo-soprano Stephanie Tritchew performing to a group of seniors watching from their balconies.

For health and safety reasons, Opera Kelowna will not publicize the date and time for any upcoming serenades but will share the performances after they happen "to spread the hope, joy and healing of music to our wider community."
