A live webcam was turned on over the nest of an osprey pair on top of a FortisBC power pole in Osoyoos recently.
After discovering the nest, FortisBC crews de-energized the pole to make it safe for the birds, and set up a live feed of a nesting pair for educational purposes, according to a Osoyoos media release issued April 25.
FortisBC gifted the Town of Osoyoos $4,200 for the project that will allow the birds’ activities to be viewed live for the next few months as they lay their eggs and babies hatch.
Ospreys are a fish-eating hawk with sharp talons and a hooked beak for handling prey, and a wingspan of 1.6 metres. The birds can be observed diving from great heights into the water where sharp spines on their feet allow them to grab fish, according to the release.

The birds breed between April and September and the eggs are incubated for 40 days before they hatch. The chicks fledge in July at two months of age and will remain close to the nest for food for a few weeks after.
The male will provide most of the food in the coming months while the female will be in the nest. Observers will see the female is larger than the male and she has a pattern of brown feathers across her white chest, while the male’s chest is plain white.
A live webcam is set up over an osprey nest in Kelowna by FortisBC every spring but it hasn’t been turned on yet. The live cams are part of the company's Osprey Nest Management program that protects the environment around natural gas and electricity infrastructure.
