The Lake Country Museum is showcasing the history of South Asian immigrants coming to the area with a documentary called In a New Land.
A 1911 census recorded the first south Asian immigrant moved to Lake Country in 1906, although many are assumed to have gone unrecorded. The documentary is below.
Kelowna city councillor Mohini Singh narrated the film and said the challenges immigrants faced included racial intolerance, riots, and property damage. Members of the South Asian community worked for equal treatment of individuals.
The earliest known settlers still in Lake Country are the Pablo family who moved to the area in 1977.
