A Kamloops pilot encountered a baby bobcat on one of his regular trips to the Kamloops airport and took a video of the interaction.

Jan Nademlejnsky has been sharing videos of his flights in his ultralight craft over the Tournament Capital for over a decade, and this is the first time he had a bobcat visit his hangar.

“I was really lucky,” he said. “It was a rare sight to see.”

Nademlejnsky was at the airport clearing snow off his aircraft, preparing for a flight on Dec. 30 when the small cat appeared.

“I saw the footprints the day before and they looked like domestic cat prints but were too big,” he said. “The next day when I opened the gate to the hangar I saw a tail. It looked like a domestic cat and I thought maybe it was after the mice that run around there.”

It was the tufts of hair on the bobcat’s ears that made Nademlejnsky realize it wasn’t just a regular cat. He pulled out his cellphone and started recording.

“I went through the gate, hoping I would meet and it was sticking its head out from behind a building looking at me,” he said. “I started talking to it and eventually it started to jog away. I followed it and it went under a picnic table where I got some good video of it.”

Nademlejnsky said he followed the cats tracks to other areas of the airport.

“I knew by its footprints it was looking for some way to get out,” he said. “I tried to push it through the gate but was not successful.”

The bobcat went through a gap between the fence and the building and disappeared from view.
