A pair of Kelowna filmmakers produced a documentary about what makes Falkland unique, from rodeos to ice fishing and the community’s history.

Alex Pavlovic and his associate Ivan Gorbenko teamed up to make a short film about Falkland on their YouTube channel KaizenParadigm.

When Pavlovic lived in Vernon he was curious about life in Falkland and the community’s past.

“Falkland is just on the road to Kamloops and I always think what’s in this town? What is this little town doing? What’s the history there?” he said.

The film dives into the history of the Falkland Stampede, one of the longest running rodeos in Canada, and more.

“The stampede, the gypsum mine, just the rural life and sense of community you don’t always get in the big city,” he said.

Pavlovic and Gorbenko funded and made the documentary on their own. They used drones and AI to make the project what they envisioned.

“We looked at a few people to provide voice overs but they didn’t quite fit what we wanted to do. We found an AI software and used that to generate the voiceovers. Technology is getting better and better everyday,” Pavlovic said. “There will always be a need for a person to be behind the content though, the machine can’t really create, it’s more there to assist people.”

Pavlovic said the documentary was well received by Falkland folks.

“People were commenting on Facebook telling us how much they liked it, so I think it went over well,” he said.

Pavlovic has experience making commercials but this was his first documentary.

The pair have showed their documentary at film festivals and plan to make films that explore other small communities like Falkland.

“We’re in the process of talking to some other communities right now where we want to film more.”
