When Tk’emlups te Secwepemc told the world last year that it found unmarked graves at a former residential school, it caught the attention of the nation as well as the world.
What was missing, however, was some important context, which a CBC show tried to explain last week with tragic, and often horrifying personal testimony from Kamloops Indian Residential School survivors.
In The Reckoning: Secrets unearthed by Tk’emlups te Secwepemc, The Fifth Estate showed Jan. 13 how the First Nation is coping with the traumatic discovery of what is assumed by many to be the unmarked graves of school children, in an apple orchard on the school property.

The burial site was discovered in May, 2021 with the help of a ground-penetrating radar specialist.

The story shows former students sharing their memories of physical, sexual and emotional abuse by school staff and Catholic priests, and describing the intergenerational trauma it created in their families and communities.
A national Indian residential school crisis line has been set up to provide support for former students and others affected by events that occurred there. Call 1-866-925-4419 at any time.
