A Cariboo man with a passion for geology is showcasing a Cariboo volcano in his latest video.
The Nazko Cone is roughly 100 kilometres west of Quesnel and is considered the easternmost and youngest volcano of the Anahim volcanic belt in the Chilcotin-Nechako Plateau, according to the Smithsonian Institution.
Joey Only, a resident of Wells and a northern radio show producer, published a video of the cone, Nov. 13 on his YouTube channel Joey Only - Cariboo Weather Dude. It has already gathered more than 1,000 views.
He drives past the Nazko Cone on his way to and from work and he and his co-worker, who has a drone, decided to feature it along with a UBC study.
“It’s not the only active (one) in B.C.,” he said, adding there’s potential volcanic activity in Wells Gray Provincial Park near Clearwater, Mount Edziza in northern B.C., and the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt north of Vancouver.

“It could be a matter of time for B.C., having said that I don’t think there’s any grave danger,” he said, adding the last time the Nazko Cone erupted it covered one-square kilometre.
Since 2007, more than 1,000 micro-earthquakes have been reported in the area.
“If the quakes were to evolve into a volcanic eruption, thankfully, there would be minimal fallout, in terms of affecting communities and infrastructure, by way of lava flow…. The big threats are forest fires erupting from the lava and ash clouds and gases effecting air transportation routes and those who may be exposed to the ash and gasses emitted by the eruption,” according to the UBC study on volcanic activity in the region.
Only is going to be showcasing more of the Cariboo wilderness on his channel this winter, he said.
The Nazko Cone is 340,000 years old and and last erupted roughly 7,200 years ago.
