A Kelowna man got an unexpected visit from a bobcat earlier this week and managed to capture the experience on camera.

Anthony Cesare said the wildcat was spotted in the yard of his Lower Mission home on Wednesday at around 4 p.m. He saw it again today, Jan. 14, and said neighbours have also seen it wandering around the neighbourhood for the last few weeks.

“It’s definitely something that’s unusual, seeing it walk up to the backdoor,” he said.

Casare did say he reported the sighting to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service and was advised it's typically to see bobcats in the Kelowna area but to report it again if it becomes a hazard.

“It was pretty neat to see but at the same I just gotta be cautious as well as I’m not too familiar with the wildlife in general,” he said.

He’s been living in Kelowna for the last four years and hasn’t seen anything like this in the neighbourhood before.

Generally nocturnal, the bobcat is a solitary stalker and requires large continuous expanses of habitat for its survival, according to Nature Conservancy Canada, a land conservation organization. The wildcats are found throughout North America.
