An abandoned home burned down in Oliver last night.

The structure was already fully involved when emergency crews arrived, according to Oliver Fire Chief Bob Graham.

“It was fairly hot when we got on scene,” he said.

The house was located at the intersection of Station Street and Bank Avenue

Members of the Oliver Fire Department were focused on preventing the flames from spreading across the property’s overgrown grass and shrubs.

“We basically had to just let the fire burn the structure down,” said Graham.

Firefighters spent about two hours dealing with the fire, and then a small crew remained on scene to douse out the remaining heat and monitor the scene.

The call came in at 12:17 a.m. this morning, April 30, according to the department's daily incident report.

Graham said the cause has not yet been determined but added the property is known to be used as shelter by squatters and this was the third fire at that address in the past month.

“I couldn’t say if they’re related although three fires on one property within a month does seem pretty suspicious.”
