The parking lots and streets of Lumby were packed this past weekend for the third annual Lumby Outhouse Race, the biggest turnout yet.

Local resident Brian Krog said the crowd on Sunday, Jan. 21,  was so big it was like the whole community was there.

"The streets were lined with parked cars, there were tons of kids and lots of cheering and laughter," he said.

The annual event takes place at the West Salmon Trail parking lot in Lumby every winter and is hosted by the Monashee Trail Society. Teams build outhouses on skis following basic construction guidelines and enter a round robin of races.

While over 20 teams of homemade outhouses on skis raced, Krog said the crowd cheered the loudest when local firefighters and police officers raced against each other. He said both teams had great outhouses to race and there was a lot of laughing when they crash into each other.

“I had to get some photos of it. This time, the firemen won," he said.

A team from the Vernon Winter Carnival Society entered an outhouse for the first time calling it the Toilet Trotter, which was built, designed and decorated by volunteers.

“We love taking part in community events and this one seems so perfect for us – another fabulous winter event,” carnival society board chair Laurell Cornell in a media release. The Toilet Trotters entered three races and tipped over during the third, but the team "got back up and finished with pride."

Krog said a legal firm won the race in the end.
