iN NUMBERS: Kamloops, Okanagan cities spending hundreds of millions on public projects

Roads, sewers, parks and a $250 million recreation centre aren’t cheap, but Kelowna is coughing up the dough.

This is how Kamloops and cities around the Okanagan compare when it comes to capital projects on the go this year.

Here are the numbers:

  • 86: Capital projects are listed on the City of Kelowna’s website
  • 17: Capital projects listed by the City of Vernon
  • 12: Capital projects on the City of Kamloops’ website
  •   6: Capital project highlights listed by the City of Penticton
  • 31.3 million: Dollars Penticton is spending on capital projects in the 2025 budget
  • 28.6 million: Dollars Vernon is spending on infrastructure projects in 2025
  • 251 million: Dollars Kelowna is spending on redeveloping the Parkinson Recreation Centre
  • 7.61 million: Dollars for an outdoor skating rink in Kamloops’ Riverside Park
  • 17.6 million: Dollars for capital projects in West Kelowna this year
  • 135 million: Dollars for Vernon's Active Living Centre. 
  • 275 million: Dollars approved for the Kamloops' performing arts centre and sports facility. 
  • 0: Consistency when it comes to how different cities post information about these projects online
