iN COMMUNITY: Hundreds of motorcyclists join forces for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Kelowna's Harley-Davidson on McCurdy Place.

More than 200 motorcyclists joined in Kelowna earlier this month for the third annual Celebrity Charity Ride and Event in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central and Southern Interior BC.

The ride portion of the day, Aug. 9, was led by Sons of Anarchy Stars Kim Coates (Tig Trager) and Mark Boone Jr (Bobby Munson). They also provided signing and photo opportunities to attendees and joined ticket holders at the official rooftop after party hosted at Kelly O’Bryan’s on Bernard Ave in Kelowna.

This annual charity event raises funds for the tireless efforts of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central and Southern Interior BC.

“The event was a great success and the community support was overwhelming,” the organization’s Executive Director, Helen Brownrigg, told iNFOnews. “We have been running programs for over 50 years in Kelowna and provide a variety of programs which are all school based. We provide one to one mentoring as well as numerous group programs. We partner with the schools to ensure that we reach as many students as possible.”

Funds raised from Saturday’s event will directly impact their efforts in the region by providing food and supplies for their programs and expanding their reach.

Alongside the main events were multiple, vendors and nonprofits from Kelowna and the surrounding region. This included groups like Discovery House, small businesses like Seafoot Creations, food trucks like Nic & Biggie’s bar-b-CUTE-rie, and the not-for-profit biker corporation Urban Bulldogs Against Kids Abuse.

We had a chance to speak with a member of the Urban Bulldogs about their donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters and hear more about their work in Kelowna.

“Urban Bulldogs Against Kids Abuse is an international not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting children and families facing abuse. The Kelowna chapter stands alongside kids in court, offers emotional support, and works year-round to raise awareness and funds for programs that help abused and at-risk youth,” said Joe "Scrappy" Sinclair, the of President the Bulldogs' Kelowna chapter and National Security Officer for the national arm of the organization.

“Each year, we host our annual Poker Run to raise funds for our cause. This year’s event, held on May 31, brought in just over $7,000. With those funds, we’ve donated to local charities that align with our mission— such as the PEACE Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Club, Food for Thought — and we’ve also helped individual families and children in need,” Joe said.

If you’d like to get involved in these charities at their future events, there will be a MEGA Bike Fundraiser on September 25th to support Big Brothers Big Sisters, and they’re looking for donations from companies and/or groups that wish to sign up for the ride.

You can join the fundraiser here.

As for Urban Bulldogs Against Kids Abuse, they will be announcing more details on their annual Halloween Haunt and Christmas Giving events shortly.

“We try to be as involved in the community as possible and work hard to get our name out there—not for our own recognition, but to spread awareness and make sure kids know they have allies who care about them," Joe said.

You’ll find our team at both the MEGA Bike Fundraiser and the Halloween Haunt this year, so make sure to stop by and say hello.
