An improvised explosive device or IED detonated by the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit in Kelowna yesterday, Feb. 27, didn't appear to be targeted the nearby businesses.

The devise was found on the north side of Highway 97 near Cooper Road so police closed the highway between Spall and Hardy roads for seven hours until the disposal team could travel from Vancouver and “render” the device safe. A number of businesses were also evacuated.

“The initial investigation has shown that the IED is not linked to any other incidents throughout the city or province and there is no evidence that this was a targeted event,” Acting Officer in Charge, Insp. Beth McAndie said in a news release. “The IED appears to be sophisticated but the purpose of it is not known. Further forensics are taking place and we are in the infancy of our criminal investigation.”

The investigation continues to figure out what the contents of the device were and its possible purpose, the news release says.

“I want to thank the public and the community for their support yesterday in staying away from the area in question and to letting our teams do the work to keep everyone safe,” Insp. McAndie said in the release. “We know the extensive road closures were impactful to our citizens however our top priority is keeping the public safe.”
