An impaired driver knocked out the power for some Vernon residents this morning after he crashed his truck into a hydro pole.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, the crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. when, in the 8200 block of Okanagan Landing Road, the truck hit a hydro pole and a fire hydrant.

The vehicle was badly damaged in the crash and when police arrived on the scene they suspected the 22-year-old driver had been drinking.

The driver then failed a breathalyzer test twice, with the device recording a "fail" each time.

The Vernon resident was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

He was then driven to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Hydro crews along with City of Vernon staff were called to the area to access the damage.

The release doesn't say how many people were affected by the power outage or how long it lasted.
