A fire in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park Sunday morning is believed to have originated from a Coldstream property.

The District of Coldstream won't say much about the fire, but it started in the early morning hours, July 24, and likely could have spread to a "massive" interface wildfire if not for the quick action of the local firefighters, according to a district media release.

"Ignorance is no excuse when dealing with fire risk and prohibitions in our community. Everyone is expected to know the rules and abide by them in order to protect our community," the news release from the district reads.

"As the incident is currently under investigation, we will have no further comment at this time," Coldstream chief administrative officer Trevor Seibel said in an emailed response.

It's unclear exactly when the fire started, how large it became and what time it was extinguished.

District of Coldstream staff, including the fire department, was unavailable to provide more details about the high-risk urban interface fire.

The Kamloops Fire Centre, which includes the Thompson-Okanagan region, is under a fire fire ban, which prohibits category two and three open fires. It also prohibits fireworks, sky lanterns and burn barrels.

"This would also includes flares," the release reads. "Within the District of Coldstream boundaries, the discharge of fireworks or flares is expressly prohibited without a permit."

B.C. Wildfire Service implemented the fire ban on July 15 and failure to comply can result in steep fines up to $10,000.
