Iconic RCMP musical ride returns to Salmon Arm this summer

RCMP musical ride in Armstrong, B.C.

The RCMP Musical Ride returning to Salmon Arm for a Canada Day performance this year as part of a cross-country tour and celebration of the RCMP’s 150th anniversary.

The ride has been a Canadian tradition since 1876, and features 32 police officers on horseback performing a half-an-hour, intricate choreographed show set to music.

The musical ride performs in up to 50 communities across Canada each year between May and October and travels to each province every four years, raising money for local charities and non-profit groups.

Staff Sgt. Scott West with Salmon RCMP said the Salmon Arm & Shuswap Lake Agricultural Association and the Rotary Club have been working in preparation for the big event that will take place at the Salmon Arm fairgrounds.

“They are doing quite a bit of the legwork,” he said. “The fairgrounds is a great facility with lots of barns and stables and room for the equipment they bring for the horses and staff. The agricultural society has lots of stuff on hand for the horses and our community gets behind them to help.”

There will be three shows over the weekend, one on Saturday, July 1, and two on Sunday, July 2.

Staff Sgt. West said he's expecting a “good crowd” for the upcoming shows. The last musical ride performance in the Shuswap was in 2018.

The musical ride’s 2023 final tour schedule is still in development, according to the RCMP web page.
