Old locomotive heading from Iowa to Netherlands museum

MASON CITY, Iowa - An old locomotive is on its way from northern Iowa to a new European home at a museum in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Railway Museum had been searching for a World War II-era Whitcomb diesel locomotive and learned of one that had been sitting idle for more than 10 years at the Lehigh Cement facility in Mason City.

Lehigh Cement's Tom O'Neill says the machine was given a thorough cleaning before it was picked up Tuesday to begin its journey. The museum intends to fully restore the donated locomotive and use it to take tourists for rides.
