B.C. man charged in death of wife initially believed to have drowned in 2016

LAKE COUNTRY, B.C. - RCMP say a man from Lake Country, B.C., has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife three years ago.

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey of the Kelowna regional detachment says Lambertus Westervelt is scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday.

O'Donaghey says in a release investigators initially believed Arlene Westervelt drowned on June 26, 2016, while canoeing in Okanagan Lake following a picnic along the shore.

Police now believe the 56-year-old woman was a victim of homicide.

O'Donaghey says an extensive search by fire and rescue personnel failed to locate Westervelt's body, which was found the next day by an RCMP dive team.

He says police are very grateful for the public's help throughout their investigation.
