West Kelowna is on the path to getting a new high school.

Central Okanagan Public Schools on Nov. 15, got the go-ahead from the Agricultural Land Commission to build a secondary school on 14 acres at 2829 Inverness Rd., the former site of Webber Road Elementary.

That doesn't mean it's a done deal, though.

The district will now develop a Project Definition Report to provide the provincial government a feasibility and cost analysis to consider when approving major capital projects.

If the province gives the approval to proceed with design and construction, the school will be completed within three to four years.

In a press release, district staff say the secondary school in West Kelowna will provide welcome relief to Mount Boucherie Secondary School, which already exceeds its capacity by ten per cent and is projected to grow by five percent each year.

In March 2019, The Ministry of Education supported Central Okanagan Public Schools to search for a suitable site to accommodate its number one capital priority: building a second secondary school in West Kelowna.

The search was a challenge because there are few large sites in West Kelowna that are not in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

The district will inform the community on new developments in the procedure.
