There were 689 cases of COVID-19 recorded in B.C. over the weekend but the number of people in hospital dropped to 359 from 468 on Friday.

The number of people in intensive care units went up to 51 today, March 14, from 46 on Friday.

About half the of people in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not in there because of COVID but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.

Of the new cases, 280 were recorded on Saturday, 211 on Sunday and 198 on Monday.

There were 150 new cases in Interior Health over the three day of the weekend, 213 in Fraser Health, 166 in Vancouver Coastal, 102 on Vancouver Island and 58 in the Northern Health region, according to a Province of B.C. news release.

The real number of cases is estimated to be three to four times higher because many people infected with COVID are not getting tested or take rapid tests that are not recorded in these figures.

Fourteen more deaths were recorded over the weekend, including two in the Interior Health region, bringing the pandemic death toll to 2,946, according to a Province of B.C. news release issued today.

The vaccination rate for people over the age of 12 with at least one dose went up slightly to 93.4%, as did the 90.9% who have at least two doses while 56.7%, have three doses.
