ICBC is encouraging British Columbians who plan on visiting family and friends over the holidays to plan ahead and be prepared for unpredictable road conditions as there will be an increase in traffic on highways that are open.

Over the holiday period, 540 people are injured in over 1,900 crashes in the province, according to an ICBC media release.

To ensure drivers get to their destination safely, ICBC is offering travelling tips during the holidays, such as following travel alerts, staying updated on road conditions, and making sure your vehicle is winter-ready if travelling through mountain passes.

In addition to having winter tires, ICBC recommends travellers top-up wiper fluid, and pack an emergency kit including a blanket, food and water.

Drivers are reminded that posted speed limits are for ideal conditions, and to adjust their speed to fit the possible wet, icy or snowy road conditions, always maintain a safe distance between vehicles and take a break in a safe area when needed.

Drivers are also reminded to avoid distracted driving and leave their phone alone while behind the wheel.

Make important calls before you get in your vehicle and program map directions before you begin your trip, ICBC said.

If holiday plans involve alcohol, plan for a safe ride home by arranging a designated driver, calling a taxi or taking transit.

ICBC Christmas holiday statistics include 1,200 crashes in B.C., with 740 in the Lower Mainland, 150 on Vancouver Island, 170 in the Southern Interior and 75 in the North Central region.

On average, two people are killed and 340 people are injured in the Christmas crashes, ICBC said.

During New Year’s there are approximately 730 crashes in B.C., with 480 crashes in the Lower Mainland, 84 crashes on Vancouver Island, 110 crashes in the Southern Interior and 45 crashes in the North Central region.

On average, one person is killed, and 200 are injured in New Year’s collisions.
