POEM SHOWS HER DEVOTION TO THE MAN WHO SHOT HER IN DISPUTE ABOUT MONEY

KELOWNA - Towards the end of the trial for Keith Wiens, sentenced to life in prison today for second degree murder, the Crown told the court they could never know the story from the perspective of the victim, Lynn Kalmring.

Evidence at the scene of the crime where Kalmring was fatally shot on August 16 of 2011, testimonies from family and friends and the pencilled notes Kalmring made on a three-page letter Wiens wrote to her are the only traces left that speak to her character.

Following today's sentencing, Kalmring's sister Shelley Pertelson shared a poem she found on Kalmring's computer. The poem was written by Kalmring and Pertelson said she kept a copy of it with her throughout the trial.

On a dock, I was left standing desperate and stranded
Never had I felt so alone and empty handed
A year ago when my whole world fell apart
That day I vowed.. to make a fresh start...
To find someone who wouldn't give up.. when things got tough
someone who would know..just a smile is not enough
A touch I want to feel... and a voice I long to hear
Whenever I am happy.. or simply want someone near..
Keith, I want you to know what's in my heart..
For it no longer wants to be lonely and dark..
I want to be there when you need me, and accept you for who you are
As I would expect you to be for me,.. not distant and far
I will not lie to you and I will not use you, or make you guess how I feel
I want to share my dreams, my joy, my pain, and for you to know I am REAL
I will not shut you out when you hurt, but listen .. and comfort you
And believe in you, when you are happy, or even when you're blue.
You might believe FREEDOM is your companion, but she will not be there when you reach out for her in the dark of night and need someone to care
That Freedom will be replaced by loneliness, who's cold touch
will never warm you, make you feel wanted or love you as much
Or show genuine compassion and concern
Like me ....... Vern

(Vern was a nickname used by Kalmring)
