An older Martin Street single-family home will likely see the wrecking ball following council approval of a variance to allow a seven-unit townhouse development on the property.

Council gave unanimous approval at last Tuesday’s meeting, April 20, to allow the variance for 783 Martin St., which requires the following allowances:

  • increase the amount of building face projecting into a required side yard from 25 to 35 per cent
  • reduce a landscape buffer from 3 metres to a half metre
  • reduce rear yard from 6 m to 5 m
  • increase hard surfacing from 60 to 81 per cent

City planner Steven Collyer said the three-bedroom townhouse units will have ground level garage parking. The application has been reviewed by the City’s technical planning committee and 73 nearby property owners have been notified of the proposal with no replies coming back.

The proposed development is located across the street from the library and museum, and within walking distance to Penticton High School and downtown businesses.
