House arrest and rehab for Kamloops man with lengthy criminal record

KAMLOOPS - A Kamloops man has avoided more jail time for six offences, if he can stick to his rehabilitation program and house arrest terms.

Ryan Paul Clarke, born 1979, has been addicted to heroin which led to a lengthy criminal record over the past two years, Kamloops Provincial Court judge Stephen Harrison said.

Harrison told the court today, May 2, that Clarke had pleaded guilty in a previous court appearance to six charges including shoplifting, breach of probation and recognizance, domestic assault and possession of stolen property.

A stolen truck had been crashed by Clarke, but Harrison did not go into details surrounding the circumstances of the offences.

Although Clarke pleaded guilty, he's expected to be released from custody today and be taken into the care of a VisionQuest Recovery Society representative as part of his sentence.

Harrison imposed a four-month conditional sentence on Clarke with strict conditions including he spend at least 60 days at VisionQuest, a 90-day period of house arrest and no consumption of drugs or alcohol.

"That is, of course, a plan," Harrison said. "Whether it's successful or not will wait to be seen."

Harrison warned Clarke that if he breached his conditions on his sentence, the order could be terminated and he could wind up back behind bars.

Following the completion of his conditional sentence order, Clarke will remain on a one-year probation.
