Homeless Penticton woman sentenced for assault gets assistance from her victim

PENTICTON - A homeless Penticton woman facing an assault charge was released from jail yesterday and her victim is providing her with assistance in finding shelter.

Megan Deanne Moncrieff entered a guilty plea to an assault charge stemming from an incident that took place Nov. 14, 2017 when Moncrieff attended the Interior Health Outreach Centre on Martin Street in Penticton.

Crown Prosecutor Ann Lerchs told court Moncrieff was at the counter seeking her support cheques and became agitated when staff refused to give her more than one.

She became verbally angry and was asked to leave the office, but while being escorted out she punched, kicked and bit support worker Brian Midwood on the right hand.

Midwood was present for Moncrieff’s sentencing yesterday, April 9, when Judge Jeremy Guild sentenced her to time served for the assault and prepared to release Moncrieff on a 12-month probationary term.

Defence lawyer Norm Yates said his client had mental health issues that needed to be addressed on an ongoing basis upon her release, but noted the woman was homeless and would have no place to go following her release later in the day.

Midwood discussed Moncrieff’s situation with the court, agreeing to assist Moncrieff in finding a shelter bed as well as making arrangements to help her get to the shelter upon her release.
