Edmonton Thunder advance to semis after topping Esso Cup round robin

BURNABY, B.C. - The Edmonton Thunder clinched a semifinal berth at the Esso Cup national women's midget hockey championship after finishing atop the round robin.

Elizabeth Salyn, Mikaeli Cavell and Taylor Hughson scored for Edmonton in a 3-2 win over Quebec's LHFDQ Nord on Thursday.

The win moved the Thunder two points clear of the second-place Regina Rebels, who defeated Atlantic's Metro Boston Pizza 2-1.

Edmonton will face North Bay in the semis Friday after the Ice Boltz beat the host Fraser Valley Phantom 1-0.

Valerie Audet and Danae Guay each scored short-handed goals in the third period for LHFDQ, which finished third and will play Regina in the first semifinal.

In the afternoon game, Kelsey Bohay scored twice in the second period for the Rebels.

Emma Winters provided the lone goal for Metro.

In the late game, Taylor Murphy scored the only goal of the game in the second period for North Bay while Sabrina Picard earned the shutout with 24 saves.

The tournament ends Saturday with the bronze and gold medal games.
