After over two weeks of headaches for commuters in the Okanagan, the section of Highway 97 north of Summerland closed by a rockslide will reopen tonight.
Highway 97 was closed on Aug. 28 after a slide dumped rock and debris on the main highway through the valley.
Crews have installed a lock-block wall to protect the route from falling rock, according to Ministry of Transportation media release issued this evening, Sept. 11.
“The berm is partially complete and has significantly slowed movement of the material at the site, allowing the furthest lane from the slope to reopen to single-lane-alternating travel,” reads the release.
Drivers can expect delay of up to 30 minutes in single lane alternating traffic and the highway may be closed again on short notice.
No word on when the highway will be fully reopened.
