Highlights of July 29 Kelowna council meeting

Rezoning for new middle school
Council forwarded the rezoning of Steele Road to a public hearing on Aug. 13. It is proposed that the area is developed into a park and new middle school.

Recycling incentive
Council agreed to enter into a contract that would start in May of 2014 with Multi Material British Columbia that will result in reduced residential recycling fees and increase the types of materials accepted by the curbside collection program.

Event Development Fund
Council endorsed the Event Development Fund Guidelines, approved the distribution of the funds by staff and supported the request for staff to submit a budget submission for ongoing grant funding.

Hospital Area Plan
Council directed staff to meet with the Interior Health Association to discuss the area boundaries and report back. The Hospital Area Plan will guide future redevelopment opportunities while protecting the integrity of the neighbourhoods surrounding Kelowna General Hospital.

Community Climate Action Plan
Council received for information a report about the City’s Community Climate Action Plan achievements and next steps, and directed staff to focus on road transportation reduction initiatives in 2014.
