Highland Valley Copper mine evacuating due to wildfire

A copper mine located near Logan Lake has been told to evacuate due to wildfire.

An evacuation order was issued at 6 p.m. Aug. 14, by the District of Logan Lake for Highland Valley Copper, located in Spences Bridge, due to the Tremont Creek wildfire.

Logan Lake is already under an evacuation order.

The Tremont Creek wildfire is burning within three kilometres of Logan Lake and is currently mapped at 43,773 hectares in size, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service.

"There is significant fire activity on the south and east flanks this afternoon. Ground crews are focused on structure protection in Tunkwa Lake, where a heavy-lift helicopter is supporting with bucketing operations," according to the service's latest update at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

"On the southern flank, the fires edge is approximately three kilometers west of Logan Lake. Air tankers are currently supporting by dropping fire retardant, and personnel are focused on structure protection."
