Someone has stolen dozens of signs from a Lake Country park and the district is trying to get to the bottom of it.

Jack Seaton Park has lost its maps and wayfinding signs from two of the information kiosks as well as multiple trail marking posts throughout the park. In total 45 signs are missing, according to a media release.

Walk Around Lake Country had placed these signs as part of a larger wayfinding project that was funded by the federal Healthy Communities Initiative grant and the Rotary Club of Lake Country, the district said.

“Walk Around Lake Country, working with the District, purchased and placed wayfinding signs on Lake Country trails to encourage residents and visitors to walk and hike because good signage helps hikers feel comfortable and stay safe,” said Dev Frase, Walk Around Lake Country chairperson, in the release. “The loss of these signs is a big setback to Walk Around Lake Country volunteers as they represent a significant amount of funds and effort. We’d really like to get them back and reinstall them.”

Lake Country Riders is another organization that had worked on the signage around the park and is disappointed by their disappearance.

“Lake Country Riders recreation group has been working for the past three years with the District Parks team and community partners to develop, build, map, and sign trail for mountain bikers of all ages and skill levels at Jack Seaton Park,” said Rich Deans, Lake Country Riders president, in the release. “The signs are important to make sure anyone new to the area and sport knows where the trails are that relate to their ability. Safety is a high priority when it comes to using the trails.”

Anyone with knowledge of the location of the signs is asked to return them or call the District of Lake Country at 250-766-5650. If preferred, the RCMP non-emergency line is also available at 250-766-2288, under file number 2023-61941.
