Heavy rains and flooding force closure of Mission Creek Greenway

Swelling water levels due to a heavy downpour yesterday caused the closure of the underpass.

With yesterday's huge dump of rain, swelling of Mission Creek is once again forcing the Regional District of Central Okanagan to close parts of the trails system.

The district announced today Mission Creek Greenway underpass at Casorso Road Bridge is closed because of flooding.

Heavy rain caused the creek and flow to rise quickly and levels are expected to remain high, with more rain in the forecast for the rest of the week. The trail on the south side of Mission Creek at the Gordon Drive Bridge is also closed until further notice.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan has signs and barricades at each location warning hikers of the dangers along the recreational trails. The underpass will remain closed until waters recede.

The north-side creek underpass at Gordon Drive is still open however, though the district says this may change at any time.

Creek levels are being monitored by Regional Parks staff along the entire length of Mission Creek Greenway. Water levels could rise unexpectedly so children and pets should remain at a safe distance from creek banks which may be slippery or might crumble due to erosion from the spring runoff.

Boaters using Okanagan lake boat launches are advised to watch for floating debris entering the lake as a result of runoff.
