KELOWNA - Heat women's volleyball won their first match of the season by defeating Mount Royal in a four-set win last night at UBC Okanagan.
UBC Okanagan's defeat of the Mount Royal Cougars ended the team's losing streak, a media release says.
Fifth year senior Ann Richards led with with 19 kills, while the two playing on Richard's wings had big nights as well. First years Jade Bussard and Sydney Grills both finished with 13 kills, a career high for Bussard.
The scores for each of the four sets were: 25-19; 26-24; 25-22; and 25-20.
The turning point of the match was in the second set, as UBCO took a 24-20 lead and looked to capture their second set win in nearly a month, Mount Royal roared back to draw even at 24. What looked like another missed opportunity turned into motivation as the Heat received kills from Richards and then Grills to grab the set 26-24.
"First win of the season is always good, this one coming a little later then we're used to, but regardless not easy to win in this league," Heat head coach Steve Manuel says in the release. "To play a really good Mount Royal team this weekend and come out with the win we're pretty happy."
