CHILLIWACK, B.C. - A British Columbia hang-glider pilot has been sentenced to five months in jail for the death of a 28-year-old passenger who fell 300 metres.
William Jon Orders pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing the death of Lenami Godinez-Avila, who died nearly two years ago.
Orders failed to properly connect Godinez-Avila before takeoff in the Fraser Valley.
He was also charged with obstruction of justice after he swallowed a memory card containing video of the fatal incident, but the charge was later stayed.
The sentence includes three years' probation prohibiting Orders from hang gliding and requires him to educate others about the fatal incident.
