Today evacuation orders and alerts are abound in the Lower Nicola region.

As there is danger to life and property the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) sent out evacuation orders and alerts in a media release today, May 6.

Residents were advised to leave immediately and shut shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.

For support services for food or accommodation evacuees can report to 1721 Coldwater Ave. Merritt, B.C. It is across from Elk's Hall, next to Cadet Hall.

The TNRD recommends five things to do when an evacuation alert is in effect:

  1.  Locate all family members and be prepared to evacuate your residence and property to an identified safe reception center.
  2. Gather essential items such as medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers (insurance), photographs and immediate care needs for dependants.
  3. Prepare to move any disabled persons and children.
  4. Collect pets and pet needs.
  5. If possible, move livestock to a safe area.
