An Oliver photographer was surprised to see a group of eagles this weekend and managed to snap some photos of the elegant birds.

Bob Young said he’s out every day taking photos and this is the first time he’s seen them on Tuc-el-nuit Lake this year, Feb. 19.

“There was a load of them last year. This little is little different with so much ice but generally, they sit in the willow trees and they’re basically there every day,” he said.

He was surprised to see they were out on the lake and thought they were originally ducks as the ice has been thicker, making it more difficult for the birds to get fish.

He uses a good zoom lens to take photos of wildlife as well as his Nikon 950.

His tip for beginners to snap photos of wildlife is to “go have fun, it doesn’t matter if the pictures are blurry, it doesn’t cost you anything,” he said.

He sees the eagles every year on the lake.

You can identify a bald eagle as adults have a white head, whitetail, and a large bright yellow bill; elsewhere the plumage is dark. Most of Canada’s bald eagle population can be found on the B.C. coast with inland populations found in boreal forests across the country, according to the Nature Conservatory of Canada.
