A Good Samaritan has been commended by Merritt police for rescuing a driver after their vehicle plunged into lake.

Merritt RCMP got a report that a vehicle went off the road on Highway 5A at Nicola Cut-off Road Sept. 29, according to a release.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle plunged into the water immediately behind the Nicola Lake Dam.

A Good Samaritan was following behind the vehicle when it crashed, and jumped into the lake to rescue the driver. He was able to pull the driver before it sank.

The driver was transported to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries.

"The Merritt RCMP would like to recognize the Good Samaritan for his actions," said Cpl. Brock Hedrick of Merritt RCMP. "Without his assistance the outcome of this incident would have been drastically different."

A police investigation revealed that the incident was due to driver inattention, and the driver has been charged under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.
