Top-ranked LPGA golfer Yani Tseng confirmed for CN Canadian Women's Open

June 14, 2012 - 6:31 PM

COQUITLAM, B.C. - Top-ranked LPGA Tour golfer Yani Tseng will play in the CN Canadian Women's Open.

Golf Canada confirmed Thursday that Tseng will be part of the field competing Aug. 20-26 at The Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam.

The 23-year-old native of Taiwan is a 15-time LPGA Tour event winner, five-time major champion and two-time LPGA Tour Player of the Year. She is returning to the site of her first professional victory, winning the Canadian Women's Open at this course in 2007.

The field will also feature 15-year old New Zealander Lydia Ko, the top-ranked women's amateur golfer in the world.

Earlier this year Ko became the youngest person known to ever win a professional golf tour event, winning the 2012 Bing Lee/Samsung Women's New South Wales at the age of 14 years nine months five days.

Ko's record was topped earlier this week when Canadian amateur Brooke Henderson of Smith Falls, Ont., won a CN Canadian Women's Tour event at 14 years nine months three days. Henderson also earned an exemption into the Canadian Women's Open.

"Together with CN, we are pleased to welcome Yani Tseng and Lydia Ko – the top-ranked professional and top-ranked amateur in the world, respectively – to compete in Canada’s National Women’s Open Championship," tournament director Sean Van Kesteren said in a statement. "Yani continues to astound and entertain golf fans with her incredible shot-making ability and consistency, and Lydia is one of the most exciting and accomplished up and coming amateurs in the world."

A field of 156 competitors will take part in the $2-million tournament.
