HAMILTON - Stuart Appleby and former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel are among five players setting the early pace at the RBC Canadian Open.

There was a crowded leaderboard at Hamilton Golf and Country Club midway through the first round with Appleby, Schwartzel, Bo Van Pelt, Jhonattan Vegas and Troy Matteson all having opened with a 5-under 65.

They shared the clubhouse lead, two shots up on a group that included J.J. Henry, John Huh and Josh Teater.

David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., posted the best early score among homegrown players with a 68.

He finished as the low Canadian when the Canadian Open was last held at Hamilton in 2006.

Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and defending champion Sean O'Hair were among the players with an afternoon tee time.
