KELOWNA – The B.C. Fruit Growers Association have a new leader.
Fred Steele, an orchard operator from Kelowna and the former vice president of the association, was elected at the 125th annual BCFGA convention Saturday.
Steele says that he plans to get to work immediately and is presently in Victoria meeting with ministers.
He replaces former president Kirpal Boparai who was forced to step down in 2012 for shipping apples to an independent packer and not the local fruit packing co-op as was mandated in his contract.
Steele, 67, was a radio broadcaster who has twice served as vice president of the BCFGA. He was nominated by Julie Sardinha, the widow of past association president Joe Sardinha who served as president during Steele’s second term as VP.
