The KGH Foundation is announcing an unprecedented $22,000 gift from Kelowna’s Department of Family Practice – Obstetrics Group supporting the ‘Giving Giggles’ campaign for KGH’s Perinatal Unit.
The gift is a group effort, involving 16 maternity doctors (family practitioners who provide care to expecting mothers and newborn babies).
"Only a very small number of family doctors in Kelowna provide maternity care, and we often find ourselves supporting each other at all hours of the day and night. It’s important for us to come together and show our support for the new Perinatal Unit, which is allowing us to provide more patient and family-centered maternity care. We feel privileged to work in this team environment, in this wonderful new facility, to provide the best care and experience we can to families during this special time." - Dr. Julie Parker
Opening one year ago, the brand new Perinatal Unit at KGH boasts multiple upgrades, including an open and bright/modern space, single and semi-private post-partum recovery rooms, expanded NICU (neonatal intensive care unit), new surgical suite and central neonatal monitoring system. Since its opening, upwards of 1,600 babies have been born, with close to 15% of all babies requiring acute care. It’s for this reason that the maternity doctors felt their support was invaluable.
