WEST KELOWNA  - A new era for the Okanagan Regional Library will kick off this Saturday at the grand opening of the Westside Learning Lab.

The Westside Learning Lab is in a new space at the Okanagan Lake Shopping Centre in West Kelowna. A branch of the regional library, the Learning Lab is focused on community partnership and technology.

According to Michal Utko, director of marketing and communications, the Learning Lab's construction began at the tail end of 2018 and took roughly two months to complete. The finished space is chock-full of community spaces and meeting rooms, but its most exciting features involve technology.

The centrepiece of the Learning Lab is a "maker space," which provides visitors to cutting-edge technology like 3D printing, coding, robotics, video recording and more. There is also a sound booth that will be available for podcasts, family projects, musical instruments and other auditory adventures.

Utko said the Learning Lab was made with cooperation from the Westbank First Nation. He said the Learning Lab's recording equipment could be used to capture native languages that are being lost. The Learning Lab will also have a small selection of books to borrow.

Utko said the Learning Lab was made with cooperation from the Westbank First Nation. He said the Learning Lab came about after the Regional Library conducted a community survey and discovered people wanted a dedicated creative space.

The Learning Lab will have its grand opening at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.
