Gelato master's pecan and maple syrup gelato wins sweet international award

July 05, 2012 - 2:03 PM

VANCOUVER - Success was sweet for a Vancouver gelato maker who has won an award at an international gelato competition in Florence, Italy.

James Coleridge, who owns the Bella Gelateria in Vancouver, has nabbed the technical award at the Florence Gelato Festival 2012.

Coleridge was the best of among 30 gelato makers with his pecan and Canadian maple syrup recipe.

The cherry on top for Coleridge came from the majority of the thousands of festival goers who gave his icy treat the people's choice award.

Coleridge says he considers himself a custodian of the old way of making handcrafted gelato.

His Vancouver shop is the first in North America to use the classic gelato machinery advocating slow process and small batches of gelato.
