A predicted spike in gasoline prices is now hitting Kamloops and the Okanagan today, Feb. 2.

Two weeks ago, on Jan. 20, Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst with En-Pro International, predicted that gas prices would jump to as high as $1.89.9 a litre in the region.

That increase started today with at least one station posting $1.65.9 for a litre of regular gasoline, according to GasBuddy.com.

That was the Petro-Canada on 27 Street in Vernon at 7:10 a.m. today and is 16 cents a litre higher than two weeks ago.

Petro-Canada stations in other cities were also at the top of the pricing grid with two stations in Kamloops showing $1.63.9 while most other Kamloops stations were at $1.59.9 and Costco was showing $1.44.9.

Those prices are likely to change during the day as adjustments are made.

Two weeks ago, most gas stations in Kamloops were selling regular gas at $1.48.9 per litre while Kelowna sat at $1.52.9.

Most Kelowna stations had jumped by seven cents a litre this morning to $1.59.9 while Costco actually dropped a penny from where it was two weeks ago to $1.45.9.

Most gas stations in Penticton were at $1.49.9 but some were posted at $1.59.9 while most in Vernon were at the $1.46.9 to $1.48.9 range.

McKnight predicted the highest prices would be in mid-April as demand is outstripping supply and major U.S. refineries are shutting down for their annual spring maintenance programs at the same time as COVID travel restrictions are easing.

Gas in Vancouver is selling for $1.68.9 to $1.70.9 a litre while it's ranging from $1.55.9 to $1.69.9 in Abbotsford.
