An online fundraiser has gathered thousands of dollars for the family of a slain Kelowna security guard.

Harmandeep Kaur, 24, died in the hospital after she was allegedly assaulted by a man working at UBC Okanagan, Feb. 26, during her shift as a Paladin security guard.

Originally from Kapurthla, Punjab, India, Kaur came to Canada in 2015 with the dream of attending university to become a paramedic. She recently received her permanent residency status.

"Her path towards fulfilling this dream had not been easy as she first studied at Columbia College in Vancouver and simultaneously worked to pay for school. Eventually, she found her way to Kelowna in 2018," according to a GoFundMe page started for her family and created by Kuljit Pabla.

Since then, an outpouring of support for her family has been shown across B.C. The fundraiser has raised more than $75,000 as of March 11. The initial goal was $25,000.

A man has been arrested under the Mental Health Act and may be facing murder charges, according to the Kelowna RCMP. No charges have been laid at this time and the investigation is ongoing, said Cpl. Tammy Lobb, with the Kelowna RCMP, via email.

A vigil was held for Kaur at UBCO last week and the Okanagan Sikh Temple has also offered its supports to the Kelowna community following her death. She attended the temple.

Best Service Pro, the university's janitorial service provider, said it is working with UBCO and Paladin Security to review its processes following the attack.

The online fundraiser can be found here.
