Two hundred and fifty athletes, coaches, administrators and proud parents gathered at the Vernon Lodge last night, June 14, to recognize the top high school athletes in the North Okanagan.

They were entertained by former NHL player Aaron Volpatti and the W. L. Seaton Secondary Jazz Band.

Volpatti gave a powerful speech where he highlighted three keys to success, 1) investing the time in practicing your skills, realizing that you need 10,000 hours, 2) building and maintaining confidence, and 3) knowing your role.

The Rotarians from the four North Okanagan Rotary clubs presented 27 awards to deserving athletes.

The event was sponsored by the Rotary clubs as well as Gold Sponsors Vernon Optometry, Bannister GM, Bannister Honda, Capri Insurance, and a host of Silver Sponsors.

Top honors for the night went to:

  • Ella Oduro, W.L Seaton volleyball and basketball player, awarded the Top Academic Female Athlete Award,
  • Jacob Molitwenik, Vernon Christian track, volleyball and basketball player, awarded the Top Academic Male Athlete Award,
  • Hannah Bennison, Vernon Secondary cross country runner, awarded the Best All Around Female Athlete, and
  • Ben Hladik, Vernon Secondary football and basketball player, awarded the Best All Around Male Athlete.

Team of the year honours went to the W.L Seaton Girls Volleyball team and the Vernon Secondary Football team.
