The most difficult section of the Trans-Canada Highway widening project through the Kicking Horse Canyon east of Golden has reopened to four lanes of traffic.

Phase 4 between Castle Junction and Golden opened with four lanes of traffic today, Nov. 30, according to a Ministry of Transportation press release.

Construction has been paused until the spring when the ministry's contractor will be doing landscaping, wildlife fence installation, painting permanent lines and some final paving.

The speed limit will remain 80 km/h until the final touches are done in the spring, then it will be raised to 100 km/h.

More than $600 million has been spent on all phases of the highway improvement project with $215 million coming from the federal government and $385 million from the province.

Information about lane closures and delays due to spring construction will be released by the ministry in March 2024.
