FortisBC just got approval for a liquefied natural gas storage facility in Kelowna as it works to meet the city’s energy needs.

The British Columbia Utilities Commission approved the Okanagan Capacity Mitigation Project which is a small scale natural gas storage facility planned for Spall Road that is meant to help meet energy demands during peak times of the year, according to a press release from FortisBC issued today, March 4.

This natural gas storage facility is set to be operational by the winter of 2026-2027.

The first phase will have a mobile tank that has 60 cubic metres and three LNG tankers ready to go in case of extreme cold.

FortisBC’s natural gas demand peak usually happens when the weather is the coldest.

The second part of construction is going to start in 2027.

FortisBC said there will be six permanent storage tanks to meet increasing demand. Each tank will have a 190 cubic metre capacity so the facility should be able to store 1,140 cubic metres.

FortisBC said the natural gas will be brought in from Delta. The tanks are expected to be empty for most of the year.
